ReservationsThe Attraction
When we set out to create the Pohutu Cultural Theatre, we were not content to provide visitors with just another show in an ordinary venue. We wanted to be the number one indoor Maori experience in the country and we believe we have reached that goal. So do the fastidious people at Qualmark who gave us their sought after and hard to attain endorsement too.
Outdoor experiences are great too, but often inclement or cold weather prevent visitors from fully appreciating the performance and location. By re-creating an authentic experience indoors, and within the hotel property, we can ensure each and every visitor is catered for with exceptional standards in performance, comfort, service and food.
Simply walking into the Pohutu Cultural Theatre is awe-inspiring. You'll want to linger in the 3-metre high entrance tunnel with its impressive carvings and murals depicting sky and sea. As you arrive in the theatre a 2.5 metre carving of the demi-god Maui towers above you and the floor offers an impression of arriving on land, just as ancient Maori arrived on the land we now know as New Zealand.
To see the stage is to marvel at the size and scope of the Pohutu Cultural Theatre. Multi-layered and finished in contoured local landscape, the stage is 25 metres wide with a six-metre high backdrop complete with water feature carvings of revered Maori gods. A large stage certainly comes in handy for a show that is, in every sense, larger than life.
