Rotorua's Most Grueling Endurance Events

We all know that Rotorua is famous for its unique thermal forces, thrills and Maori culture, which we all love. But what some may not realise is how this unique location is now playing host to some of the most grueling, yet rewarding endurance events and adventure races. So if you’re looking for things to do in Rotorua and other Rotorua events then it might be time you consider shaping up and giving one of these races a crack…

 

Coming up next week the region hosts the Hospice Rotorua Half and Quarter Ironman on Saturday December 17th. The event is now running into its 12th year and attracts over 600 participants. It’s not every day you take on a 2km swim, 90km bike and a 21km run but there’s no better location to take in all in. The race begins at Blue Lake followed by a bike section described as “drop dead stunning with a couple of steep climbs”, then an on/off-road run section.

 

 

And then there is the mother of all endurance events – the 4th annual Vibram Tarawera UltraMarathon on March 17, 2012. It doesn’t come much tougher with 100km, 50mile (85km) and 60km run events but participants will be rewarded as they pass through exotic forestry, native bush, lakes, waterfalls and follow a beautiful river. If your not up for doing it all yourself, there is the option of taking part as a relay team. If you’re a little unsure you could try reading up on some the stories from the 2011 Tarawera entrants.

 

 

For something a little lighter, in its second year, is the Expand-A-Sign 3D Rotorua. 3D Rotorua will run next year on Sunday June 3rd, 2012. Its not all endurance with distances starting at 2km for the under 10’s, but works up the categories to the whopping 50 km multisport category including a paddle, mountain bike section and a run. With a range from short distance to endurance, there are plenty of options to satisfy everyone from your part timers to the elite athletes with individual disciplines or combinations of running, walking, mountain biking and kayaking.
